Interview with Lightlorn (SE)

Tonight, Lachryma Christi brings you an interview with a Cosmic/Atmospheric Black Metal duo, Lightlorn from Sweden.
Lightlorn just signed a deal with Black Lion Records, and will be re-releasing their EP These Nameless Worlds in April 2023.
Lightlorn haven't been around for two long. A couple of years maybe. Their music and lyrics are highly influenced by themes such as the cosmos, astronomy, our existence in the Universe, and so on.
So let's read the interesting stuff they have to share with all of us.

Lightlorn, where does this name come from, as the name for this project?

Well, I went through a lot of different names, but nothing really captured the feeling of the music. Eventually, I combined the words “light” and “lorn”, the meaning of which is “bereft of light” or “loss of light”. I thought I had coined the term but it turns out I wasn’t the first.
Either way, I think it’s a great name that perfectly represents our sound.

How did the idea of Lightlorn come up, as a band? How did it all start?

A few friends and I started a band in 2020 during the pandemic and we ended up recording a couple of songs, but we just couldn’t find the time to make the band work. Since I was the songwriter, I decided to take the songs, ideas and riffs I had created and formed Lightlorn as a studio project. I reworked the songs extensively, and once I was happy with them, I asked Riaan to help out with the drums.

You've been around since 2021, and already have an EP released, "These Nameless Worlds". How are you finding the reception of your followers towards it?

I’m very pleasantly surprised! The EP has been received much better than I ever expected. It feels great that the songs have made such an impact on so many people. When I formed Lightlorn and decided to release the songs, I had hoped that at least a few people would dig it, but I honestly could never have imagined that they would be enjoyed all over the world!

Since Lightlorn formed around the end of the restrictions of the pandemic, how do you think the industry for this kind of music is now? How easy has it been for you to share your music?

If anything, I think the pandemic gave people an opportunity to explore their creativity, be it music, art, writing. Creativity is the bastard child of boredom, and since so many people were stuck at home during the pandemic, it proved to be a fertile breeding ground for artistic creation.
For touring bands, the pandemic really hit hard. Not being able to go out and play shows was definitely a huge problem for a lot of bands.

But for someone like me, releasing music as the restrictions were easing worked out well.

I guess it’s easier these days for people to share their music, since there are so many platforms to do so. The tricky part is standing out from the multitude of voices all wanting to be heard.

When can we expect a full-length by Lightlorn?

Hopefully this year sometime. I’m working on several songs at the moment and the plan is to start the recording process in March or April. So, unless something unforeseen happens, the album should be out this year.

Lightlorn had two members only. How does it work in terms of composing? What comes first, how does it go?

It’s a little different for each song. Sometimes I write a riff or melody that I like, and then build the song up around it. Or I might start with a song title and then try to capture the emotion of the title. For instance, "Stargazing in the Abyss" (the 4th song on the EP) is a title I came up with a long while back. It’s a play on words that refers to a well-known quote by Nietzsche, but I think it also conjures up feelings of isolation mixed with wonder. So, before I wrote a single riff or melody for the song, I knew what emotion I wanted it to convey.
After I have almost finalised a song, I send it to Riaan so that he can work out the drum lines. Once he is done, I may make some minor adjustments to better fit the drums.

Also, since it's only the two of you, do you ever play live or plan to?

We don’t have any plans to play live just yet. Time is a major factor, but you never know what the future holds.

One of the themes you focus on is Space? What is it that fascinates you about it?

I have been interested in the cosmos since I was young. There’s something so inherently frightening about the cold, vast universe in which we live – but there’s an undeniable beauty to it as well. The size, distances, and timescales are difficult for our minds to fully comprehend. People are so caught up in the mundane concerns of their daily lives, we sometimes forget we exist in this essentially infinite universe. It also raises very interesting philosophical questions. But basically, I’m just fascinated by space and our place in it.

What other subjects influence you in your music?

Existentialism mostly, primarily Nietzsche and Sartre. I think that the human search for meaning is inextricably linked to cosmology, astronomy, and other scientific fields. Our morals and values must be created based on our place in the cosmos, however insignificant it may be.

Does any of you have parallel projects? How easy is it to concile everything?

Riaan plays drums in an international black metal band called Nastergal. So he alternates between the two bands. They’ve just completed the recording of their debut full-length.

What can we expect from Lightlorn in 2023?

Well, as mentioned, we hope to release our full-length album during the year. We’re also pleased to announce that we’ve recently signed a worldwide record deal with Black Lion Records.

Is there anything else you’d like to add to this interview?

Black Lion Records will be re-releasing "These Nameless Worlds" on CD around April. So, make sure to grab a copy when it’s out! We should also have some merch available soon.

Lineup:
Renwar - all instruments, vocals and lyrics

Review: Sacrificial Temple first album "The Return of Cruelty and Medieval Supremacy"

Today, Lachryma Christi brings you a short review of the first album of the band Sacrificial Temple, The Return of Cruelty and Medieval Supremacy, which landed in my Inbox this morning.

Sacrificial Temple are a south American band, more specifically, with members from Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina. And The Return of Cruelty and Medieval Supremacy is their first album, released in December 2022.

So, what can I tell about this album? It is very raw and thrashy, with the traditional high-pitched dragged and screamed Black Metal vocals. Very old school, with very interesting lyrics about sacrifices, invocations, black ceremonies, the plague, satan, death, everything very appropriate for the style of music they play, and for Black Metal in general.

It is very fluid, although more fast and angry than melodic. Very furious drums and riffs, making everything very dark, obscure and full of energy as well.

There are 8 tracks of very pleasant and fine Black Metal music, the real deal.

The cover is very fitting, with a medieval illustration of a torture scene, which sums up the feel of this very interesting album.

I liked it. Good stuff. My favourite track might be the title track, The Return of Cruelty and Medieval Supremacy.

So if you are in the mood for some traditional, raw, obscure, satanic, cold Black Metal, this is for you.

And you might want to hurry up, because the copies are limited. It is available in CD and tape.

Review: Ouija latest album "Fathomless Hysteros"

And now, about another band that contacted Lachryma Christi recently, Ouija, Black Metal band from Spain.

Ouija released their most recent album in December last year. It is called Fathomless Hysteros, and it is a gem.

Ouija have been around for 25 years, or more, and they play a very very melodic and profound Black Metal.

Fathomless Hysteros has 7 tracks, very elaborated and very professionally executed. Everything is very high quality, from the music compositions, to the production.

If you are into melodic Black Metal, you'll certainly enjoy how Fathomless Hysteros is put together. There is even a ballad, that is the lengthy song of the album, I See You Without Eyes. It is very emotional, angry, slow paced and beautiful.

But my favourite track might actually be The Fifth Rider.

Don't expect a lot of blast beats in Fathomless Hysteros, don't expect a lot of rawness, but expect a bit of those, combined with beautiful melodies full of emotion, with beautiful and powerful but sad riffs and dragged and sometimes shouted vocals, that make it all a lot more passionate and intense.

Speaking of vocals, the voice is also a bit different, it's not very high pitched as we have been getting used to hear in this type of music. It's actually quite deep and very impressive. Goosebump material right there.

I like it very much, it brings me a lot of feelings and I'm just sorry I haven't heard it before. I don't always listen to such melodic music, but I still do, and Fathomless Hysteros might be what was missing in my collection. Maybe it's missing in yours too!

So if you like some melodic Black Metal to get your emotions shaken every now and then, or if you sometimes like to just close your eyes and let everything be, with an amazing explosion of furious and sorrowful melody for a soundtrack, I'm sure Fathomless Hysteros won't disappoint you.

Review: Vesanus album "Graveyard Tales"

Today, Lachryma Christi brings you a short review for an album from last year, Graveyard Tales, by Italian one-man band Vesanus.

A few days ago, V contacted Lachryma Christi through the actual contact form on the blog page, to share this album. It was released by Kold Cave Production.

Turns out, I haven't heard of Vesanus before. Vesanus has been around since 2009, and he released quite a few things already, and there is even another album released this year already, called Endless Oblivion.

But today, let's talk about Graveyard Tales.
So it is a Black Metal album, apart from the last track Conclusione, which is clearly more in the realm of the dungeon synth.

Graveyard Tales is speedy from beginning to end, very fast and angry riffs and beats, and instrumentally, I find it quite catchy. The riffs stay in your head and are easy to memorise. So even if you are doing something else, chances are you'll get a song or another of Graveyard Tales popping in your head every now and then. And for a good reason, because among other things, it is melodic and well done.

The voice is different than anything I've heard before, making the whole project more original.
There is a great deal of distortion on everything, which makes it all quite "noisy" without being noise, if that makes sense.
My favourite track might be Gargoyle.

I can't call it traditional Black Metal, but it brings to mind some stuff that was being made by great bands in the early 2000s. It is quite solid and atmospheric.

If you're curious, check it out:

Review: "The Serpent & The Pentagram, The Official Chronicles of Necromantia", by The Magus and Aris Shock

Lachryma Christi had the pleasure of being able to see this book, which is coming out on the 17th of March through Pagan Records. It is the official biography of Greek band Necromantia.

If you are a fan of the band, this book is a gold mine. It is very detailed, it has a lot of information from all the 32 years of career of Necromantia, and it has a lot of illustrations of interesting items. From photographs to flyers, and other very valuable related imagery.

The book covers the band's work, demo by demo, album by album, with not only information about those, but also memories and interesting personal related episodes.

There are a lot of personal stories told by The Magus, about his life, about the life and history of Necromantia, about The Baron, about their instruments, about their relation to the occult, and so many other personal stuff.

There are also quotes by other artists, telling how they feel about Necromantia and their work, leading you to understand (if there was still any doubt) how this was and is such a loved band, not only by the public in general, but by other musicians of the same sphere.

These Chronicles speak of the influences of the band, what originated what, there is just so much information, it is a very interesting universe.

It is also all so well organized and easy to search and follow.

You can tell there is a lot of feel and there are many emotions on the writing of this book. There is also a lot of effort into giving us as much info as possible. And believe me, there really is a lot of precious information in there. It's 224 pages full of great stories, info and imagery.

There is just so much that could be said about this book. I'm sure it will make everyone who gets it very happy. I'm very happy already, and I only had access to a digital version of it. Now imagine a physical copy!

The Serpent & The Pentagram, The Official Chronicles of Necromantia is available in the following formats:

Die hard - 100 hand numbered copies
Limited - 400 copies
Regular book-only

And you can pre-order your copy here.

Review: Nethermancy upcoming album "Worship Evil Sacrifice"

Portuguese Black Metal band Nethermancy are releasing an album called Worship Evil Sacrifice in April, through Helldprod Records, and it is going immediately to Lachryma Christi top 10 releases of 2023, for sure. Some of the best Black Metal music I've heard not only this year, but in a while.

When I heard the track Tyrants | Usurpers of Light yesterday, I got really curious about the rest of the album, as it could only be very good. I wouldn't expect anything less from this trio, to be honest.  However, it is even a lot better than I had antecipated.

So what can you expect of Worship Evil Sacrifice? You can count on 8 tracks (including an instrumental intro and an instrumental closing track) that are pure old school Black Metal music. If I close my eyes, I can go straight back to the 90s. It also has a touch of that Black 'n' Roll that was being made a few years ago, but by far better than anything I have heard on that style.

The keyboards are so good, so fitting, nothing symphonic but all very atmospheric and appropriate for the genre. Pipe organs and voices (and not only) coming through at the most perfect times.
There are some Thrash Metal influences too, and they are very much welcome. From the rhythms to the riffs, to the actual feel. The track 4 Nuclear Christ Armageddon is a perfect example of that.

I love this album. There's nothing not to like in there. Everything fits so well together, there's fury, there's anger, there's heaviness even in the slowest bits, it is all very good and well put together.
All the mentioned above, plus the majestic voice with its echo, bring such a feel, it's awesome really. I'm sure I will listen to it very often.
My favourite track might be track 6 Satanic Black Mass. Or 7 Death Sermon. I can't decide.

The cover art translates very well what's inside. What you get is what you see. Pure traditional and perfectly executed Black Metal.

Finnish Black Metal band Ondfødt just released the video for the song Tvelatan, from their upcoming album Det Österbottniska Mörkret.

Review: Imperial Demonic debut album "Beneath the Crimson Eclipse"

Melodic Black Metal band Imperial Demonic from Northern Ireland are releasing their debut album Beneath the Crimson Eclipse on the 7th of April through Black Lion Records.

This is quite a good album, very influenced by what was being made in early 2000s.
It is melodic but not as melodic as some. I would remove the "melodic" from their definition, but that's me. Yes, there are the catchy riffs that stay in your head for the rest of the day (and I'm not criticizing, I say it in a good way), and there are some more slow parts in every song, as it is normal, and that is Black Metal!

There is a lot of aggressiveness in Beneath the Crimson Eclipse. Blast beats are constant, the songs are full of rage and fury, which together with the more melodic bits, translates into a very heavy and powerful Black Metal. The vocals are very intense and heated, and everything makes sense together. There is nothing out of place in this album.

There are 5 tracks in Beneath the Crimson Eclipse, and the first one, The Furnace, might be my favourite. It is so aggressive, deep, strong, and furious. It is a perfect way of starting the album. And I promise the feeling remains all the way through the 5 tracks. This is not an album to listen one song today and another one another day. It is an album that you listen in one go, for better enjoyment, and of course, for some adrenaline rush.
Beneath the Crimson Eclipse has consistency, toughness and a lot of energy. It is quite a fiery album. Very pleasant, very stable, very well done in fact.

For those who don't know, Imperial Demonic started as a solo project. The drummer Camer on Åhslund-Glass wrote the whole album, but the band is now composed of five members. It would be great to see them live, in fact.

For now, let's just listen to Beneath the Crimson Eclipse over and over again, because it is too good. And it feels like it is actually too short!

Interview: ANZV (PT)

Today, Lachryma Christi brings you an interview with the Portuguese band ANZV.
ANZV have been around since 2019 and recently released their debut album Gallas. And also recently, they signed a deal with Alone Records.
Lachryma Christi had the opportunity to see them live in Lisbon last December, and they put on a very different show. Very intense and ritualistic. Not only the atmosphere, but the music as well.
So, let’s know them better, through the words of M.

What does ANZV mean?

First of all, we’d like to take the opportunity to clarify that ANZV is pronounced “Anzu”. ANZV (from Sumerian Anzû) is a mythological creature, half lion half eagle, and born from the primordial waters of Apsu. In Sumerian mythology, it is the personification of the unexplained elements of nature, such as storms and hurricanes.

How would you describe the type of music you play? I’ve seen the description “Death/Black Metal”, but your sound is really original. How do you define it?

This question, for us, is always uncomfortable. That would actually be the best description. There are clearly two predominant sounds in the composition, we don’t have a different way of defining it, to be honest.

Both your music, your look, and your posture on stage are quite ritualistic. What is your inspiration in this regard? What idea do you want to deliver to your audience?

The inspiration comes from the mythology in the world’s oldest civilizations, and the mysticism that surrounds the revealed transcripts. From the curiosity that arises about how the cults would be at that time. We want the audience to enjoy a sensory “trip”, referring to a ritualistic atmosphere that is what ANZV is all about. It is through synesthesia that we will try to transpose to the public, in an aura of obscurity influenced by Middle Eastern mythology.

What are your lyrics about? What are you inspired by?

At ANZV we have always been more interested in the occult from a more obscure and less popular perspective. Hence, the inspiration comes from the fascination with the Middle East mythology and all the enigmatic aura that surrounds it. In the case of “Gallas” it is still like an introductory approach to the Sumerian, balancing a lot between Nihilism and the beliefs and values imprinted in the subconscious of the mind, as well as the cult in past civilizations allied to the mind.

Having started your band formation in 2019, even before the pandemic and its restrictions, how was it for ANZV to share music and even to do live shows? Do you consider that, by now, things have returned to normal?

I effectively started working on music that I had been recording, and guiding the sound towards what I had thought of in 2019, as you mentioned. When the pandemic hit a few months later, the album was practically finished and the recordings were basically all done. The pandemic just gave me more time to improve some things. At that time there were no plans to even present ANZV live, so this sharing of music and shows was not felt as an anomaly. While the pandemic was going on, ANZV was maturing, and that wasn’t a negative aspect at all.
ANZV is not a pandemic project, it is a pre-pandemic project, so I don’t consider that there was anything unusual about the whole process, as you would expect us to have at least a year to prepare the release of the album as well as to prepare the live performances. What we didn’t count on and that in a way “harmed” ANZV was the production of the vinyls. We had to delay the release for over a year, due to constant delays. That did become frustrating. On the other hand, it forced ANZV to confer another maturity to finally perform live.

ANZV members are already quite experienced in this environment and industry, as can be seen not only by your current act, but also by your history, regarding the bands and projects you have been part of.
How did the idea of forming the ANZV come about?

I always had a main project, to which I always dedicated all my composition, however, this project, due to geographical issues of the elements that compose it, a few years ago was destined to be solely a studio work. However, after being inactive for a few years, I decided to go back to composing music and what came out was very different from what I had done before. By coincidence, an invitation to join another band also appeared. As things didn’t work out in that band and ideas were boiling, I started to dedicate myself seriously to ANZV which was already beginning to outline the path to be followed in the next compositions and let things grow by themselves.
The ideas kept coming up and ANZV started evolving to the point of us starting to think about bringing the project to perform live. It was about that time that the line-up was also getting completed, and with that the whole atmosphere to play live was also being developed, through the songs created, leading to a carefully created look, in the presentation of ANZV to the public.

In December of 2022, there were shows scheduled to happen in Lisbon and Porto, with the bands Grievance and Belphegor. In which shows, Belphegor had to cancel their presence.
Since ANZV and Grievance kept their performances, how were those shows for ANZV, even though it wasn’t what was originally scheduled?

Only the show in Lisbon was kept. In Porto it didn’t make sense to keep it. It all came down to too many factors weighing in, on the final decision to cancel Belphegor. In addition to all the logistical costs that were getting worse with inflation, the previous days overloaded with concerts everywhere, led to the inevitable cancellation. In Porto, since there was already a Black Metal festival going on, it wouldn’t make any sense to be dividing the public. The offer was good for any Black Metal fan, so it didn’t make any sense to go on with that show.
As for Lisbon, on the other hand, despite being overloaded with events in the previous days too, on that day there was nothing going on, therefore, on the part of Notredamme Productions, as well as for Grievance and ANZV, it made sense to keep the show. And it was good that we did. We wanted to present the album in Lisbon and this would be the opportunity. We had an audience that came on purpose to see an Underground show and not specifically Belphegor. So, as the venue was composed of true fans of both bands, it went very well because everyone was there to see both bands. We really enjoyed the receptivity and would like to return as soon as possible, as we were very well received.

Gallas was considered one of the best albums of 2022 by many magazines, webzines and others, including Lachryma Christi Webzine. Do you consider that 2022 was generous to ANZV?

We consider that we worked a lot to achieve what we wanted with “Gallas”. I couldn’t consider that it was all due to the 2022 generosity, because we worked really hard for it too. Nor can I consider that just our work was enough to have the return we had. It was a little bit of both. The finished work came out at the right time.

What about for 2023? There are already some shows scheduled. What else is on the horizon for the ANZV?

Yes, we already have a lot scheduled, but we can’t disclose it yet.
Regarding shows, we already have some of them finalizing the scheduling, and in the next few days we expect to start spreading news.

Thank you for your attention, once again. Is there anything you would like to add to anyone reading this that hasn’t been discussed today already?

Thank you to Lachryma Christi for all the support you have given us. Stay tuned as there will be more news soon.
