Interview with Kull (UK)

For those who never heard, Kull are a band based in UK, and made of four members of Bal-Sagoth and the guitarist/composer of Tarkan, who is now vocals in Kull.
Their music can be very powerful and also magic, as it takes us to a complete different world, once they are heavily influenced by the music of Bal-Sagoth.
In fact, their first album, Exile, had been originally planned to be he 7th album of Bal-Sagoth. So if you haven't heard them yet, you now have an idea of what they sound like.
You'll notice questions about the album being out already (the initial date was 30th of April), but after all it comes out on the 24th of May.
Let's read what Jonny Maudling has to say.

Why KULL for a name of a band? What is the exact message behind it?

KULL is a fantasy inspired band like Bal-Sagoth, and the name comes from a similar place so we went with that.

KULL has members of Bal-Sagoth, and the sound is a lot similar. Why did you chose to follow that same line?

Myself and my Brother Chris wrote the music in Bal-Sagoth, so it will sound musically the same as this. It's just the way it sounds when we work together creating the music.

How did the idea of the band KULL came up?

It just seemed like the right time to do something a bit different from the past.

How does the making music process work for you? What comes first?

Most of the music is written on keyboards, then the guitar riffs are worked out over this. Finally the lyrics are fitted over the music, written by our front-man Tarkan.

Your first album, Exile, just came out. How has the reaction of the public been to it?

Very positive so far, it's not actually out until May 24th.

Are you having any shows following the release of Exile? If yes, is there anything you would like to advertise on here?

Nothing concrete yet, something we will decide upon the release of the album.

How would you describe the style of the music you play?

Epic fantasy metal with heavy guitars.

What is your main inspiration when you write your songs?

I don't really get inspired musically these days, I just slog away at the keyboard until something good comes out.

What is Exile particularly about?

History, interwoven with fantasy fiction and elements of the fantastic.

Now that Exile is out, what are your plans for the next future? What can we expect from KULL?

Just go to the next stage in the process. We want to see how the debut is received first before considering what we do next. Obviously there will be merchandise available, like shirts and stuff.

Any last message or advice you would like to leave to your followers and people who are starting a band right now?

Learn to play well together by playing covers at first if you have no songs, then write from your heart and try to do something original, as hard as that can be. Also a big thanks to everyone who has supported Bal-Sagoth and Kull over the years!
