Review: Nattehimmel's new album "Mourningstar"

Norwegian Black Metal band Nattehimmel, just released their first album Mourningstar, today.

It is so good and different from what I've heard this year so far. It is even going straight to Lachryma Christi's top ten albums of 2023.

If you do a little research about their members, you'll recognise them from other bands and projects. Their background is quite varied, and it shows. Because Nattehimmel is not just another regular Black Metal band. They actually have a lot of influences of other styles, and that is noticeable from the very beginning of the album.

What can you expect? You can expect very intense and emotional melodies, where keyboards are constant as a very filling and strengthening foundation. Everything is so melodious, musical, comforting. Very appropriately, there are more fast paced bits, which evoke such an angry and nearly desperate emotion as well.

The voice is more clean than not, although there is space and time for the more Black Metalish vocals, and it all fits so well. There is a lot of equilibrium on everything.
My favourite track might be Slay the Shepherd. It is such a beautiful piece!

The whole album is very imaginative and refined. And although this kind of music is not what I usually go for, there is top-notch quality there. It is excellent, indeed. I will keep listening to it in the future, and I hope you all will too.
