Review: Into the Nethermost's latest album "Once Upon the Graveyard"

Into the Nethermost are a band from Spain, more precisely from Barcelona. They play a very nice Death/Black Metal.
Earlier this year they released their album Once Upon the Graveyard. It is a 8 track album. Really good. It is always good when Lachryma Christi is surprised by e-mails from bands who are still not famous worldwide. Sometimes there are good surprises like this album.
Once Upon the Graveyard is really melodic, really heavy, really full of good vibes. These guys really know what they want, which direction they are going and what they want in the end. Their sound is really sober, really big, really emotional. The voice is very angry and serious, matching all the professionalism of the rest of the band.
It has some rock bits, and some acoustic details, but in general it is really heavy, with strong melodies and a really good attitude.
Hopefully they will get what they deserve. Hopefully we will hear from them at some time soon again.

Review: Necrophobic's latest album "Womb of Lilithu"

Wow, this is such a strong release!
So, Death/Black Metal band from Sweden, Necrophobic just released a new album through Season of Mist called Womb of Lilithu.
Necrophobic has been around for a long time now, but seems like this album is the stronger one so far. It is so heavy and wise and mystic. It is really full of fury at the same time. When you think nothing will surprise you, it does, and always in a very good way. It is very epic, grand, monumental. If you haven't heard it yet, don't miss it, or you will regret later.
The voice is amazing, so full of expression and of power.
Production is amazingly good, really easy to listen, no noise, no confusion, nothing wrong really.
Choirs on the back are impressive, everything sounds so great, so majestic.
14 tracks of pure amusement astonishment. Honestly, really good.

Review: Nocturnal Depression's upcoming EP "L’isolement"

Nocturnal Depression, Black Metal band from France are releasing an EP on the 29th of November through Avantgarde Music, called L’isolement. It will be released on vinyl only and 100 copies of this EP will include a bonus CD featuring two extra tracks (Nargaroth and Forgotten Tomb cover songs).
This is a really good work. Original tracks are just awesome, really powerful and full of rhythm. It is aggressive enough, melodic enough, really good. Really melancholic and even romantic at times if we can put it that way.
The covers are just perfect. Both tracks are the most remarkable of each band for Lachryma Christi. They are not only great amazing songs, as the covers are really good as well.
Nocturnal Depression are a very good band, but this EP is such a good surprise. So good, everything is really good in here, so pleasant. Depressive, yes. But good, very good.
Go for L’isolement when it comes out, only 9 days to wait now, it is perfect.

Review: Abigor's recent EP "Supreme & immortal is the Art of the Devil"

Austrian cult Black Metal band Abigor released last month an EP called Supreme & immortal is the Art of the Devil through Avantgarde Music. It is just great. So good it is even hard to describe, almost painful. If you are a fan of the band you will just love this EP. If not, you will probably love it anyway.
Two tracks, so much power, so many emotions, so much strength on it. It is no doubt one of the best releases of 2013, really genius. Everything so damn perfect, so controlled, so amazingly professional, so much awesomeness all together.
Proper Black Metal, everything just matches, all the melodies, all the riffs, all the tiny details, all the rhythms, the voice, just really great stuff. To listen over and over again and still feels like wanting more.
Make a favor to yourselves and just get into a fantastic journey while listening to Supreme & immortal is the Art of the Devil because it is really amazing.
Short review, but Lachryma Christi is speechless.
And by the way, you can find an interview with Peter Kubik here:

Review: Grim Funeral's recent album "Abdication under funeral dirge"

Grim Funeral is a Spanish one man band. Abdication Under Funeral Dirge is the second album and it was released earlier this month through Avantgarde Music. Grim Funeral has been around for ten years now. The album is good as a global thing. The concept is quite good, but the guitars are somewhat baffling when they are heard by themselves as they are so out of tune. Lachryma Christi made a big effort to understand if it was on purpose on not, but sadly the conclusion came out blank.
But, as said before, the concept is good. All together actually sounds good, interesting work. The voice is so full of pain and despair, really hard to not feel sympathy with it.
All tracks are very "funeral" but the music is nice, if you can put up with the guitar issue, that is. Still, there is nothing very original here, it is normal for nowadays. If you like the sort of dragged black metal with screaming hurt voice and a bit of confusion here and there you will like this. Don't expect anything very neat, expect something OK.

Review: Obsidian Tongue's latest album "A Nest of Ravens in the Throat of Time"

Obsidian Tongue, Black Metal band from USA released a few months ago a new album called A Nest of Ravens in the Throat of Time through Hypnotic Dirge Records.
Even though the two member band formed in 2009, they sound as if they have been playing together since always.
This is their second album and hopefully they will present us with so many more like this, so good! It is very atmospheric, very melodic, very tuned and serious and professional. Tracks are just amazing, mixing all the ingredients a good Black Metal album must have. You can find some traditional bits here mixed with some experimental stuff, lots of good melancholic melodies, lots of fast beats and riffs, acoustic bits here and there, voice is just perfect along with all the instruments. It is a really inspiring album, everyone should give a listen to it. There are some doomish parts with clean voice that make it really special and really great.
A Nest of Ravens in the Throat of Time is in fact a masterpiece. It has only 6 tracks but all of them very strong and powerful, very majestic, really, go and get it. You won't regret it.

Interview with Endezzma (NOR)

This time Lachryma Christi had the pleasure of interviewing this great Norwegian band that is Endezzma. After trying for a long time, it was now finally possible.
For those who don't know, Endezzma released an album last year called Erotik Nekrosis (you can find a review for the same here http://lachrymachristizine.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/review-endezzmas-new-album-erotik.html ), and they are currently working on new stuff. Let's see what Morten Shax told to Lachryma Christi.

What does the name Endezzma mean?

Endezzma is a personal expression about death and internal darkness, a word that spell the meaning of our transcendence into the black.

Can you tell a bit of the story of the band?

I short terms Endezzma as the last constellation that formed and lead us to where we stand today, started back in 2005 when I decided to pick up the music again and create something that I thought was missing in the era of modern dark music which we know it today. I got Trondr Nefas from Urgehal with me, and together we made the Alone EP and got Jontho from Ragnarok with us on drums. We played some shows across Europe in the coming years and started to work on a full length album namely Erotik Nekrosis. But as many people is aware of a lot of thing occurred on the way to the final release date, among others Trondr Nefas sudden death! But we have now a strong line up and for the moment we are in studio working on album nr.2 so in one way I will say we are stronger than ever.

Erotik Nekrosis is such a masterpiece, why did you wait such a long time to release an album?

Thank’s for your consideration. Well, it’s easy to look back in time and tell that we should have done this and that, but obviously we made some bad decisions concerning the working method on the recording, and we faced some problems with lost data on our way. We had some line-up changes and some other difficulties. And then in the end when we were close to the end of the production Nefas died. But all in all I just think we just didn’t rush anything. I didn’t wanted to take quick solutions to be done and at some places the hardest roads was chosen. Looking back today I’m proud we took the decisions we took based on the quality of the end result. It’s something I can stand behind 110% and that was the goal all the way during the process even though it took a light-year to be done. I can ensure everyone that the next album will be out much faster though. Actually already next year, since we already had a lot of material ready for the next album even before Erotik was released.

How has been the appreciation of the public to Erotik Nekrosis?

It’s as good as it get. The critics have been very good and united in high scores excellent reviews. Even it’s a cliché I must say that I’m not too much into leaving the faith of the band into the hands of media and the journalists. I’ve been in the scene since 1990, and I think I’m more capable of knowing what’s good and not than the majority of kid having a journalistic affair, or a “fling” with the scene for a period doing some reviews for a magazine or a website. When I think we have done the right thing, I’m confident in myself. But of course it’s less annoying to see that everyone agree with me. But at the end of the day we don’t base our musicianship on critic’s, after all we’re Black fucking Metal !

Endezzma have been playing quite a few gigs this year, was the reaction of the public as you expected?

Yes we did a lot of gigs around Europe and many more to come. The reactions from the audience have been just one dimensional awesome, I think the audience really catch the vibe and receive the energy that we put into our live shows. We give everything on the stage, no matter a small or huge crowd. It’s a darkness that burns inside us, on stage we open the gates to our inner self. When we go out on stage we don’t look back until the final tune dies out. I think too many bands today put way too little into a good live performance, or they just have nothing to tell, nothing genuine in their hearts. But if you have something you want to preach, something that really comes out from the genuine soul, you automatically speaks from your heart and express a certain energy and atmosphere on stage that people absorb and relate to very fast.

What is your own favourite track? Why?

Do you ever manage to make a mother favorite one of her children? All the songs that made it to the album have a strong position in my soul.  But maybe I can say that a song like Swansong Of A Giant have a special meaning to me. There is an energy in that song that make my blood shiver and boil when we perform it live.

What have been your biggest influences along your career?

The Devil. Hail H.I.M !

What was your most remarkable show? Why?

There have been a few memorable shows. But one that first that comes to mind must be a show in Varna,Bulgaria. We drove like 1 million kilometer, I think we was driving from Bosnia from a show the day before. It was such a fucking long drive into nowhere on the Bulgarian cost.  When we arrived, to our surprise we was met with people lined up outside the venue. The venue was very good and professional with a crazy and huge crowd. The organizer had planned a show for us in front of the stage while we was doing our shows, with local soldiers and fighters doing a battle play with helmets and swords in front of the stage during the first 2 songs, before they let the audience to the front. That was a crazy and absurd experience.

What are the plans for the next future after playing live all these gigs?

We’re entering studio this week to record the new album. We will lock our self in the studio for the rest of the year, seal the doors and come out again when we in our minds believe we have the dirtiest, sickest and most degenerated black masterpiece of all times in our hands. Like a bear in hibernation of damnation. Either we kill each other in there or we come out half alive with a documentation for the world to hear.
Next year the plan is to release the upcoming new album. And to do some dark sick live celebrations around the globe. A tour in Mexico and the U.S is under negotiation. And we will most certainly do a west European tour.

Any last message you would like to leave to fans of Endezzma and of Black Metal in general?

To the sick people out there, see you on the road!  Fans of Black Metal in general ?, well I find it hard to believe in you, who are you and will you be there in 10 years. Can’t expect everyone to have been there from the beginning, people find the darkness with time, but when you first find it, stick to it, last and stand the distance..

Nihil - Guitar
Sregroth - Bass

Review: GIG Satyricon + Chthonic @ O2 Islington Academy, 14th Nov, London

So Satyricon and Chthonic. Lachryma Christi got to the venue early enough to get a very good spot just on the front, which was a very bad idea. Cthonic is a great band, full of energy, full of good tunes.  and the vocalist is such a great frontman. It had everything to be an amazing show, if it wasn't for the sound that was almost terrible. The drums were just too loud, really perturbing, after two songs it was completely impossible to stay on the front. Just too much trepidation and everything else was very bassy. The voice at the beginning was really low as well, so it was all lacking balance, was really really disturbing. Lachryma Christi went a bit back, it was not very easy to walk around because the venue was packed, the show was sold out. It was easier a few rows back but still not good. Sadly, because Chthonic deserved much better than that.
Satyricon wasn't much  better in terms of sound, only on the third song the sound was sort of OK, but only really in the back of the venue, almost on the exit door. Everything was too loud, especially again the drums, just horribly loud. Guitars were hard to hear.
Sadly Satyricon didn't play many classics, they didn't play many songs from the first albums, which is a pity. As a "cult" band that they still are, this was a shame. They still have it in them, they still manage to keep up a good show, very lively, very interactive, public was mostly satisfied, Satyr is still great, all his jokes, his posture, all his performance on stage is just awesome and the rest of the band keeps up with it, but the hits were missing. It is easy to accept the bad sound when a band plays all the songs you want to hear, and it is easy to accept the lack of hits when you can hear everything perfectly well. Now when both things are missing, it is really bad.
The encore had three songs, two of which Mother North and Fuel for Hatred, which were really the two only songs that made 90% of the public to react. And even with three guitars, it was hard to hear the riffs and melodies in Mother North, due to the confusing sound and due to the loud drums.
Hard to understand how the sound could be so wrong, Lachryma Christi has been in this venue in other situations, for pleasure, not for work, but still, and it wasn't this bad. Hopefully next time Satyricon and Chthonic will be more lucky on their shows in London, with hits or not, and hopefully next show in O2 Islington Academy will have a better sound, regardless the bands.
Lachryma Christi has no pics for this. If you have some, and if you wish to share them, you can always leave a comment with a link, or if you want to see them posted together with this article (they will be credited of course), you can e-mail lachrymachristizine@gmail.com

Review: Inferno's "Omniabsence Filled By His Greatness"

Black Metal band from Czech Republic Inferno have a new album for us, through Agonia Records called Omniabsence Filled By His Greatness.
As you must know, Inferno are around for a long time already. Almost 20 years to be more precise. They really are very respected among Black Metal world.
Omniabsence Filled By His Greatness has six tracks, all of them on the same line, all of them really angry and full of aggressiveness  Everything is quite fast, everything is quite Black Metalish, but you can find there some elements that bring to it a very special atmosphere. There are sounds at bits that make their songs different even if traditional.
It is a masterpiece in fact, and even never leaving the depressive and mad and strong side of proper Black Metal, they end up making it their own style anyway.
This album has bass lines played by guests Beldaroh (Besatt) and O. (concert member of Inferno).
If you like proper traditional Black Metal but also want to be surprised by some unexpected melodies and details that make it become unique, here is the album for you.
Everyone should give it a listen, it is really good stuff, very professional, very tuned, very sober, very together, very well done.

Review: Handful of Hate's recent album "To Perdition"

Handful of Hate are now celebrating 20 years of career and they just released yesterday their 6th album called To Perdition, through Code666 Records.
It is hard to describe the album with words. It is good. Much aggressiveness in 11 tracks.
This is very traditional, very pure Black Metal. Actually the band is quite known for their perfect Black Metal music.
Maybe To Perdition has some Death Metal influences. Still, Lachryma Christi thinks this is very Black Metalish with everything it involves.
So there are the ultra fast drums, the very suffered voice, the high pitched guitar riffs and rhythms, the melodies here and there, everything very raw and sober, with a very good production as well, not the "raw" as in bad quality or anything, everything is perfectly easy to hear and understand, no mistakes, nothing wrong in there. It is not different of what they have been doing though, following the same line of other of their releases, and following the traditional way of Black Metal itself.
So if this is your kind of thing, don't worry, you will be completely satisfied after you hear it. If not your thing, give it a go anyway, you may like it. It is addictive, it is the kind of thing you want to hear over and over again. Good stuff.

Review: Cult of Erinyes' recent album "Blessed Extinction"

Black Metal band from Belgium, Cult of Erinyes have recently released a new album through Code666 Records called Blessed Extinction.
Even though this band is sort of recent (formed in late 2009), they are really good. They seem to be really experienced with working together, as if they had been playing together for decades. They have also been quite active with their recordings, releasing something every year.
This new album, Blessed Extinction is really great. It has 8 tracks, all of them very full of power and aggressiveness. From times to times it is possible to hear a less angry bit, and it is possible to hear clean voices which match the whole thing really well. Sometimes even more experimental parts come, leading you into a really pleasant and at the same time sort of strange journey. It is incredible how a band with such a "short" career and discography sound so united and amazingly perfect.
So if you like a good dose of throaty and dragged voices with strong and furious blast beats and with fast and rhythmic guitar riffs, this is for you. Alternating with also a good dose of melody and suffering and clean melancholic voice, of course. It is really good, not very extraordinary it what comes to originality, but really good stuff, good Black Metal, good music, good musicians, good atmosphere, good influences, only goodness there. Don't miss it.

Review: Empyrium's "Into the Pantheon"

For those who don't know, Into the Pantheon is a live album of Empyrium that came out in August through Prophecy Productions. In June 2011, Schwadorf and Helm played their very first show at  the Wave Gotik Treffen in the Pantheon of Volkspalast Leipzig. They put together a great line-up for this gig consisting of Konstanz (The Vision Bleak), Neige (Alcest), Eviga (Dornenreich), Fursy Teyssier (Les Discrets), Aline Deinert (Neun Welten) and Christoph Kutzer (Remember Twilight).
The show lasted about 70 minutes and it was recorded to be released now as an audio CD. It also has a documentary of more than 100 minutes which provides a detailed account on the band's past through interviews with Schwadorf, Helm and the live musicians.
For people who are familiar with Empyrium, this album won't be a surprise, it is very much their thing, it is very similar to what they show us in the albums. Really good, their natural mix of genres, from their folk influences to their Black Metal influences.
Everything sounds great, quality is very nice, all the musicians are just amazing at what they are doing, and it really makes you feel as if you really wanted to be there at the time it happened. In fact, Lachryma Christi was invited to be present at Empyrium gig in Berlin in a few days, but sadly that won't be possible. But hopefully, in the future there will be opportunities to see them live.
It is just awesome how they all sound so focused and public sounds so amazed by their performance!
So, if you are a fan of Empyrium, go for Into the Pantheon, it is really really beautiful, a really impressive release. If you are not a fan but like this kind of classical, folk, nature influenced music, with bits of heaviness here and there, go for it.
Please, find a teaser video for Into the Pantheon here:

Review: Nhor's latest album "Within The Darkness Between The Starlight"

For those who don't know, Nhor is a British project.
In August Nhor released a new album through Prophecy Productions called Within The Darkness Between The Starlight.
This is a very special and at the same time strange music. Switches from piano melancholic melodies to furious Black Metal, and the good thing is that it all makes sense, the way the compositions are made, the sequence, is all perfect. It is really really good, very inspired on nature, very honest. A really interesting and passionate work  by someone who does everything in the project and very well. This is a very sober release, full of goodness, it is impossible to not like it. It is just perfect!
Give Nhor a go, it deserves that and so much more! Absolutely no regrets after listening to this.
Lachryma Christi tried to name the most remarkable track but it is impossible. It is all just too good, too emotional, too strong, too powerful and full.

Review: Recently released split Helrunar / Árstí∂ir Lífsins "Fragments - A Mythological Excavation"

This split came out a bit ago already, more precisely in July, through Prophecy Productions.
It is an amazing work, two tracks, from the bands Helrunar and Árstí∂ir Lífsins. It is really good, really classical if we can put it this way.
Helrunar song called Wein für Polyphem, is around 15 minutes long. It is beautiful. It has an intro featuring a female voice, singing a melancholic chant, really strange and magic. You can also hear a background sound that seems to be the sea. After around 1:50 minutes of this special intro, a male chorus takes over, always with the same background sound. It is really hypnotic. Really really interesting. Keeps you hooked. After 3 minutes of quiet and dreamy music, finally comes the awaited Black Metal part. All of it makes a great composition, everything matching and really sounding very good as a whole. The Black Metal part is heavy, fast, furious, really great, amazing throaty voice, really powerful, and a bit later on you can count on some doom bits together with male chorus. It is really good. Really makes your imagination go wild.
Second song by Árstí∂ir Lífsins called Vindsvalarmál is a bit longer, around 19 minutes, but on the same line. Starts with something that sounds like wind, and a sad romantic violin melody. Again, after 1:50 minutes of introduction it changes, and there come words, male voice reciting and in a bit comes a very furious and aggressive music, really great, really majestic, so hard to describe in words!
Everyone who hasn't heard this work yet, please do a favor to yourselves and do it. It is really great, one of the best things that came out this year! It has everything you can dream of, from melody, to anger, with all that these things mean.

Review: GIG Rotting Christ + Twilight of the Gods + Negura Bunget @ London, Electrowerkz

So Rotting Christ gig. This one was a good one. But let's start from the beginning then. First band, a band Lachryma Christi never heard of before, called Krysantemia. They played some short 15 minutes or so, but it was good. Sadly, they should have played for longer. It is not proper Black Metal, it is actually quite Death/Thrash metal. But that was quite good, quite heavy and crowd was already starting getting involved but they played really for a short time only.
Next band was Negura Bunget. And about this one Lachryma Christi doesn't have many good things to say. It is the third time  LC assists to a gig of this band. First one ten years ago, was amazing, one of the best shows ever. Second time was two years ago and it was completely different, not good. Last night it was close to terrible. It is really sad that they changed so much. They still do their "swop instuments" thing, and they still try to be entertaining and deep but honestly there are already so many things that don't match there, and that are becoming inadequate.
Third band, Twilight of the Gods. Lachryma Christi received the album for review, and didn't review it because it is not Black Metal. Still, LC heard it and it sounded like a disaster at first. Well, the gig was just great, awesome, really good. Really entertaining, the vocalist still screams a lot during his performance (which was one of the negative points in the album), but he is a great frontman. The expectations were not good, but the result was extraordinary, really amazing. A band to see again in the future, hopefully. They are very interactive, sober, really cool heavy metal posture and even though the album sounded like a "disaster", the songs at the gig were recognizable already since the first seconds, which means they really are good. If you have the chance, see them!
And to end this short review, let's go now about the headliners Rotting Christ. One of the best gigs ever. Lachryma Christi was present at their gig at The Forum (London) last year, and it wasn't so emotional as last night. Last night the venue at some point felt too small, because there was a huge moshpit at some point, and the options were to be there or to be squeezed in the back rows. Sakis was challenging people with his gesture asking for a moshpit, and the front rows went crazy. Good crazy,
They played hits, and they played songs from the new album as well. Crowd was really enthusiastic and frantic. There were people of varied styles and ages but all of them were just enjoying the gig a lot. The venue was full also of Greek people, which is obvious, but which wasn't so noticeable at The Forum last year.
Rotting Christ play each song as an hymn and crowd corresponds to it which makes everyone satisfied in the end. You could see that everyone was quite happy at each song, band and public.
As to the sound, was good, there were no major problems, not noticeable at least. The venue is not pleasant but it does the trick as there are no embarassments as sometimes big rooms bring because of the quality of sound.
Venue is not big, but this room was much better than the room where Endstille played (in the same building) not a long time ago.
Lachryma Christi has no pics for this. If you have some, and if you wish to share them, you can always leave a comment with a link, or if you want to see them posted together with this article (they will be credited of course), you can e-mail lachrymachristizine@gmail.com
